Water Analysis- Recommended Instruments

Both Discrete Analyzers & Continuous Segmented Flow Analyzers can be used for water chemistry analysis. The best instrument will depend on your daily & weekly sample throughput, space, number of analyses, automation level required and detection limits required. By selecting a water analyzer designed & manufactured by SEAL Analytical you're choosing an analyzer designed specifically for environmental laboratories & supported by over 50 years experience. All our analyzers offer USEPA, AOAC and ISO compatible methods. Please contact us to discuss your application.

NEW! SEAL brings you automated BOD analysis.

Analyzing Water

SEAL Segmented Flow Analyzers and SEAL Discrete Analyzers can be used for checking for contamination and water quality and to help determine treatment optimization as well as analyzing water samples to verify health-based and aesthetic standards. The automation of your water chemistry analysis will bring a previously unattainable level of sensitivity, speed and precision to your water analysis. All water analyzers are supplied with detailed method descriptions, including reagent make up, flow diagrams, and specific application notes.

Discrete Analyzer

Discrete Analyzers make an ideal compact analyzer for the chemistry analysis of water.  SEAL has over 30 methods for environmental analysis covering the analytes important in water chemistry analysis.

Water Chemistry Methods Using Discrete Analysis

  • Over 30 methods specifically for the environmental market.
  • Our stated detection limits will be achieved by typical laboratories. Many users exceed these detection limits.
  • We have individual letters of USEPA approval confirming our methods are acceptable for drinking water (NPDWR/NSDWR) compliance monitoring.
  • UKAS methods applied to our Discrete Analyzers are traceable to methods published in the series "Methods for the Examination of Waters and Associated Materials", produced by the Standing Committee of Analysts in the UK. The methods are acceptable for drinking water according to criteria set by the UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and the DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate).

Typical Water Parameters

We have an extensive list of methods for water chemistry analysis. The list below is a partial list of the most common methods. Contact us for a complete list.

Alkalinity Ammonia (Salicylate) Ammonia (Phenate) Boron
Bromide Calcium Chloride Chromium
Copper Cyanide Fluoride Hardness
Iron (total & free) Iodide Magnesium Manganese
Nicotine Nitrate Nitrite Nitrogen, Total
Nitrogen, Total (Kjeldahl) Phenol Phosphate Phosphate (Molybdovanadate)
Phosphorous, Total (Kjeldahl) Potassium Silicate Sodium
Sulfide Zinc

  • SEAL has an extensive library of over 100 methods for use with SEAL Segmented Flow Analyzers.
  • USEPA, AOAC & ISO compatible methods available.
  • USEPA methodologies for automated colorimetric analysis reference the Technicon AutoAnalyzer II (this model has been replaced by the AutoAnalyzer 3).
  • Each method is multi-range, giving the ability to set up your desired range.
  • Dialyzers are sometimes used to stop any color interference and/or dilution.
  • Methods used with older AutoAnalyzer II and TrAAcs systems are completely transferable to current model AutoAnalyzers.

Automated BOD Analysis

Often a tedious and repetitive process, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (also known as Biological Oxygen Demand) automation is one of the most common applications for water laboratories.  SEAL Analytical offers cost-effective, regulation- compliant and custom solutions for labs looking to automate BOD analysis and to avoid the associated tedious, time consuming, error prone tasks involved in manual analysis.

The MiniLab Robotics BOD Series provides automated BOD options for all size labs, ranging from compact models with 12 bottle capacity to larger custom models handling thousands of bottles per day. The robotic arms can be customized to handle multiple steps in the BOD analysis procedure. With a sturdy frame, encoded motors, and intelligent programming, the MiniLab Robot will maintain alignment and accurately carryout the specified automation solution.

The SEAL BOD software is fully customizable, making automated BOD simple and reliable. This ensures your laboratory needs and regional regulations can be met.
